How to choose a marketing tool
Marketing software clusters around four jobs: capture (landing pages, forms, lead magnets), nurture (email, lifecycle messaging, automation), acquire (SEO, ads, social scheduling), and measure (attribution, reporting). Suites promise all four; point tools do one properly. Suites win when your team is small and the integrations would otherwise be yours to maintain. Point tools win when one of the four is your actual growth constraint.
Name the constraint first. Buying a marketing automation platform to fix a traffic problem is expensive and does not work.
What to check before you commit
- Deliverability, if it sends email. Dedicated versus shared IPs, domain authentication, and how the vendor handles a sender who gets complaints. This matters more than any feature in an email tool.
- How contacts are counted. Most email pricing bills unengaged and unsubscribed contacts too, so the list you pay for grows faster than the list you reach.
- Consent capture and proof. Under GDPR and similar rules you need to show when and how someone opted in. Tools differ a lot in whether they record this.
- Whether the SEO tooling reflects reality. Rank trackers and audit scores are directional at best; prefer tools wired to real Search Console data.
What to watch for
Attribution claims deserve scepticism. Every tool in this category reports the conversions it can see, which means each one will happily claim the same conversion. Decide on one source of truth before you compare vendor dashboards, and treat large discrepancies as a measurement problem rather than a performance result. Watch too for landing page builders that host pages on their own domain — that sends the ranking benefit of your content somewhere you do not own.
