How to choose an AI tool
"AI tool" covers three very different purchases, and most buying mistakes come from confusing them. Assistants sit alongside your existing work — a chat window, an IDE completion, a writing sidebar — and are judged on how little they interrupt you. Infrastructure is what you build on: model APIs, vector stores, evaluation and observability. Applied products solve one job end-to-end, like transcribing calls or drafting support replies, and hide the model entirely.
Work out which one you are shopping for before you compare prices, because the three are priced on incompatible axes: per seat, per token, and per outcome.
What to check before you commit
- Where your data goes. Ask whether prompts and outputs are retained, and whether they train future models. A vendor that cannot answer this in writing is answering it.
- Which model is underneath, and whether you can change it. Products pinned to a single provider inherit that provider's outages, price changes, and deprecations.
- Cost at real volume, not at demo volume. Token pricing looks trivial until a workflow runs a thousand times a day. Model your actual usage.
- What happens when it is wrong. Useful AI products show their sources, make corrections cheap, and fail visibly. Ones that fail silently cost more than they save.
What to watch for
The category churns faster than any other on this site. A tool that was clearly ahead six months ago may now be a thin wrapper around a capability the model providers have since shipped themselves. Weight recent, specific reviews over launch-day coverage, and prefer tools whose value is the workflow, the data, or the integrations — not the model call.
