## How to choose a security tool

Security spending should follow your actual threat model and your actual
obligations, in that order. The practical groups are **identity and access**
(SSO, MFA, password and secrets management), **application security** (dependency
and code scanning, vulnerability management), **compliance automation** (SOC 2,
ISO 27001, evidence collection), and **detection and response** (monitoring,
alerting, incident handling).

For most small companies the ordering is not a matter of taste: identity first,
because credential compromise is the most common way in; then application
security; then compliance, which is usually driven by a customer asking rather
than by risk.

### What to check before you commit

- **Whether SSO is gated behind an enterprise tier.** Charging a large premium for
the basic control that prevents account takeover is common and worth pricing
  into any comparison.
- **Signal-to-noise.** A scanner that reports hundreds of findings nobody triages
has made you less secure, because it teaches the team to ignore alerts.
- **What the vendor's own security posture looks like.** Ask for their report,
their disclosure policy, and their breach history. A security tool has broad
  access by definition.
- **Whether compliance automation covers the audit you actually need**, in the
framework and region your customer is asking about.

### What to watch for

Compliance is not security, and tools that conflate them sell certificates rather
than safety. A SOC 2 report says you followed your stated controls; it does not
say those controls were sufficient. Be equally wary of tools that need very broad
permissions to your code, cloud, or email — scope them down, review the access
periodically, and make sure offboarding a vendor is a documented step and not an
afterthought.

## About this data

List Maro is an early-stage, human-reviewed directory of SaaS products — nothing is published automatically. Numbered category rankings appear only after the published evidence thresholds are met; promoted placements are labelled and kept separate from organic ordering.
