## How to choose a developer tool

Developer tools earn their place by removing a specific, recurring cost. The
useful groupings are **build and deploy** (CI, hosting, preview environments),
**observability** (logs, metrics, traces, error tracking), **data and APIs**
(databases, auth, background jobs), and **workflow** (editors, code review,
local environments).

The decision that matters most is not which vendor, but how much of your stack
one vendor holds. A single platform covering deploy, database, and auth is
genuinely faster to start with, and genuinely harder to leave.

### What to check before you commit

- **What the bill looks like under an incident.** Usage-priced tools —
observability especially — are cheap in steady state and brutal during the
outage when you most need them. Check for spend caps and sampling controls.
- **Whether it runs locally.** A tool your team can only exercise in a deployed
environment slows down every change that touches it.
- **Lock-in at the data layer.** Proprietary query APIs and vendor-specific
runtimes are the expensive kind of lock-in. Standard interfaces are the cheap
  kind.
- **The upgrade story.** Read the changelog for breaking changes over the past
year. That is a better signal of future maintenance cost than any feature list.

### What to watch for

Prefer tools that fail loudly. The worst outcomes in this category come from
tools that silently degrade — a build cache that quietly goes stale, an error
tracker that drops events over quota, a deploy that succeeds while shipping the
wrong artifact. Ask what the tool does when it is unhealthy, and whether you
would find out from the tool or from your users. Free tiers are also worth
reading closely: the limits that bite are usually concurrency and retention, not
the headline request count.

## About this data

List Maro is an early-stage, human-reviewed directory of SaaS products — nothing is published automatically. Numbered category rankings appear only after the published evidence thresholds are met; promoted placements are labelled and kept separate from organic ordering.
