## How to choose a design tool

Design tooling splits by what you are producing. **Interface design** tools cover
screens, components, and design systems, and are judged mostly on collaboration
and handoff. **Graphic and brand** tools cover marketing assets, social, and
print, where output fidelity matters more than versioning. **Prototyping and
motion** tools sit between design and engineering, and exist to answer questions
a static mockup cannot.

Teams usually need two of the three. What they rarely need is two tools from the
same group — that is how a design system ends up with two conflicting sources of
truth.

### What to check before you commit

- **Whether non-designers can participate.** Most of a design tool's value is
people outside the design team viewing, commenting, and pulling specs without
a paid seat. Check what a viewer seat actually costs.
- **File portability.** Ask what an export looks like if you leave. Proprietary
formats with no meaningful export make years of work hostage.
- **Design system support.** Components, variants, and shared tokens are what stop
a file library becoming a graveyard. Check that tokens can reach code.
- **Performance on your largest realistic file**, not a demo file. This is where
tools in this category actually differ.

### What to watch for

Handoff is where design tools are won and lost. A tool that produces beautiful
screens but vague specs pushes cost onto engineering, where it is invisible in
the tool's price. Before you standardise, have an engineer build one component
from a real file and tell you what was missing. Watch licensing on bundled fonts
and stock assets too — the terms often do not cover commercial use in the way
teams assume.

## About this data

List Maro is an early-stage, human-reviewed directory of SaaS products — nothing is published automatically. Numbered category rankings appear only after the published evidence thresholds are met; promoted placements are labelled and kept separate from organic ordering.
