# Free vs sponsored SaaS directory listings — what you’re actually buying

Free listing vs paid directory boost vs paying for rank — the honest split, using List Maro as the worked example.

Founders get sold “directory packages” that blur three different things: a free listing, a paid boost, and a paid rank. Those are not the same purchase. This post is the honest split — using List Maro as the worked example, not a traffic promise.

## Free listing ≠ invisible

A free listing on List Maro is a maintained product profile after a human reviews it. Nothing auto-publishes. If it clears review, it can show up in category hubs, search, and related-product pages when the profile is complete enough to help a buyer.

What free still will not give you: guaranteed traffic, a ranking position, votes, or a verified badge. Early-stage directories are still building audience. Treat the listing as a durable discovery surface, not a launch spike.

## What a sponsored slot actually is

Sponsored inventory here is labelled right-rail visibility — one of at most four spots, $19.99 for one month, one-time (not a subscription). Clicks go to your site with List Maro UTM tags. Paid outbound links use `rel="sponsored"`.

It is a bought card beside the directory. It is not inside the weekly edition. It is not Ranked. It is never an earned organic position.

## What money cannot buy (here)

Payment does not buy:

- Editorial approval
- A verified badge
- Votes
- Editorial language on your profile
- A higher organic rank

Those rules are public in our [methodology](/blog/how-list-maro-ranks-saas-tools) and [advertising disclosure](/disclosure). If a directory sells you “top placement” without saying whether that means ads or rank, ask which system you are paying into before you wire money.

## How to decide free vs sponsored

Ship the free profile first if the listing is thin. A paid rail next to a weak page just advertises the weakness.

Buy a sponsored slot only if you want labelled visibility while the audience is still early — and buy it knowing it is ads, not SEO juice. Skip anyone promising guaranteed DR lifts, “100 dofollow listings,” or rank for cash.

## How this fits a sane submit week

1. Get a clean free listing through human review.
2. Submit to category-relevant directories and review sites (see [where to submit your SaaS](/blog/where-to-submit-your-saas)).
3. Use launchpads for spikes, not lasting discovery ([Product Hunt alternatives](/blog/product-hunt-alternatives)).
4. Optional: book a labelled rail if you want paid visibility without contaminating organic rank ([how List Maro ranks SaaS tools](/blog/how-list-maro-ranks-saas-tools)).

[Submit a product](/submit) free, or see [pricing](/pricing) if you want a sponsored slot. We do not guarantee traffic, conversions, or rankings — we report what we can measure and keep paid separate from earned.
